Saltwater Fish Tank Equipment

Converting to Saltwater Fish Tank Equipment

When converting to saltwater fish tank equipment you will find it is not all that much different from freshwater tank equipment.  Don’t misunderstand. There are differences but you can use some of the same equipment for both types of tanks.

When converting to saltwater fish tank equipment you must first find out what kind of equipment to buy. Of course, you need filters, pumps, heaters, lights, test kits, sea salt mixtures, other important, and even some optional equipment.

Some of the different saltwater fish tank equipment to start with is the substrate.  You should change your gravel with something a little more stable for saltwater fish such as coral.

If your old equipment includes anything metal, you will want to replace it.  Saltwater fish tank equipment should be made from high grades of stainless steel to ensure that the salt doesn’t rust and destroy your important pieces.

Difference in the Fish

Having a saltwater aquarium is much different when it comes to the fish, their diets, maintenance, and many other things.  It is important to learn as much about the fish as possible before trying to take care of them yourself.  It is also a great idea to talk to the caretaker of the fish in the pet store or aquarium where you plan to purchase your fish.

When it comes to saltwater fish tank equipment and a filtration system you need to upgrade this with something more adequate for saltwater.  Water circulation is extremely important in a salt tank and you may have to add extra components for this if necessary.

Lights

Depending on what you keep in your salt tank, you may or may not have to get different lights.  For fish, the old ones should work fine but for invertebrates you will need separate special lights.

Don’t forget the water will be much different and will have to be treated differently.  Read carefully about keeping saltwater fish to make your aquarium much more enjoyable and think seriously about keeping a separate tank for quarantine purposes.
