Carbon Filter for Fish Tanks

How to choose the best carbon filter for your fish tanks

The filtration system of your fish tank, mean the difference between a healthy and a not so healthy tank.  The fish in your tank must have the proper environment to remain healthy and provide you with hours of enjoyment.

A carbon filter for fish tanks is one of the most commonly used type of filters.  You’ll need to choose your carbon filter for fish tanks based upon the size of your tank, the amount of water in your tank, and the type of fish in your tanks.

Carbon filters are made from gas activated carbon.   Granular activated carbon is made from coal, heated in the presence of steam at very high heat. This process causes the carbon to develop huge numbers of tiny pores, which trap wastes at the molecular levels by adsorption and ion exchange. It removes heavy metals and organic molecules through a process known as molecular sieving.

The best GAC for filtering water is macro-porous (having larger pores). A good macro-porous activated carbon feels light and floats when initially wet.

You should buy only carbons made by reputable aquarium supply companies. These carbon filters have been acid washed during manufacture to minimize ash content. Carbons low in ash reduces the chance of  pH shifts.  It’s a good idea to pre-soak your carbon filters in water for a few weeks before you use the carbon filter for fish tanks.  This eliminates undesirable high phosphate levels.

A carbon filter for fish tanks is cheap enough to use liberally. Always wash your carbon before use to remove the dust that accumulates during shipment. Smaller amounts changed more regularly seem to work best.  You probably want to experiment, but 1/2 cup per 20 gallons water, changed monthly is a good place to start.

Carbon filter for fish tanks is an excellent, cheap, and effective filtration method for all tanks. The potential benefits of carbon filter for fish tanks is enough that on whole you will be better off using it.  If trace element depletion is a concern, use trace element supplements with the activated carbon.
