A marine fish tank, more commonly known as a saltwater fish tank is a collection of saltwater fish and plant life. When compared to freshwater fish tanks marine fish tanks are a bit more difficult to care for and maintain. This is mainly because of the differences in the species of fish and plants that inhabit the water of the tank.
One of the biggest differences between saltwater fish and freshwater fish is their inherit adaptability to a changing environment. Let’s examine this a bit further because it is important to understand before you think about starting a marine fish tank as it is the reason why they are more difficult to maintain. Freshwater fish naturally inhabit ponds, lakes and other freshwater bodies of water. These bodies of water are quite different from saltwater bodies of water aside from their obvious difference of containing salt.
The conditions of freshwater bodies are constantly changing. When the weather or seasons change freshwater bodies are affected by these changes. Saltwater bodies on the other hand do not change as much as freshwater bodies do. This mainly due to the fact, these bodies of water are much larger and the outside temperatures and seasons do not have as much as a dramatic effect on the body of water as freshwater bodies.
Because saltwater bodies are not affected as much by the changing seasons the conditions in the body of water, do not change as often. As a result, saltwater fish are accustomed to having a steady living environment. Since the fish cannot as easily adapt to fluctuations in their environment you need to carefully maintain your marine fish tank in order to ensure the conditions are conducive to your fishes and plant life’s survival. We will discuss some tips later on in additional blog posts that will help you to properly maintain your marine fish tank.
